Awesome job so far in 2017! Keep it up.

We are responsible for tracking and reporting participant data in The First Tee participant database for Home Office.

By the 7th week of every 9-week class session, please submit a completed database form. Please send in your participant names throughout the year.

Through consistent tracking, this assists our Chapter to measure the relevance and impact of programs and monitor trends and raise funding for training, supplies and outreach programs. If you need the database form, please let me know.

This week-long academy is intended for advanced players within the chapter network who are pursuing collegiate golf. The academy provides the competitive experience of playing for a college golf team combined with the college experience through rigorous practice and training, tournament play, dorm living, recruiting education and pertinent guest speakers. Participants will cultivate and develop the golf skills, life skills and health & wellness aspects associated with competing at a higher level.

2017 Event Information
Date:July 11-18, 2017
Host Courses: Seagate Country Club, The Bears Club, Jupiter Hills and The Palm Beach Par 3 Golf Course

I had the opportunity to coach this academy, as well as The Life Skills and Leadership Academy twice in the past. Both academies were a lot of fun. Coaches get to know participants and other Coaches from Chapters all around United States. But most importantly you can change lives and mentor young ones. Dont forget to apply next year to Coach and nominate your attendees to apply!

We have two Coaches representing our chapter this year. Congratulations to Nancy StuartLPGA Master Professional and The First Tee Recognized Coach, and Craig WatsonPGA Professional, Head Coach of Womens and Mens Varsity Golf at PBA University and The First Tee Recognized Coach. They are going to represent us well!! Next year could be you!

Hello Coaches,

The rainy season is coming up and we have already experienced a few rain days in the past few weeks. I would like to tell you about an inside activity that works well for me. This class was Player level on aTuesdayafternoon. It was a very large class and due to rain, we were confined to a small space. Not only were there 25 kids in the restaurant of Hammock Creek but there were also a large group of golfers waiting to get back out the course. We all know that a mix of children and adult golfers (think adult beverages!) in a tight space can sometimes be a sticky situation.

This was the perfect opportunity to demonstrate COURTESY as a Nine Core Value. With the high number of people inside the restaurant, I had the students make up their own golf games, as well as work quietly with their team, so they were COURTEOUS to the adult golfers. What I did is have each of the 3 groups choose from a full swing game, short game or putting. The students had to come up with a name of the game, rules of the game, a diagram of the game, as well as how the game is played. I was very impressed with the creativity and teamwork these shown by the students. I have been doing this activity for 4 years and still use 50% of the games these students have created through the year. Good luck this summer and I hope we can stay dry, at least in the mornings!

I wanted to submit a written acknowledgement/note of thanks to one of our volunteers, Jillian Bourdage.

Jillian is a 15-year old student at American Heritage School, who volunteers with The First Tee in Pompano Beach. (Jack Bloomfield met her a couple of years ago, and cajoled her into helping out, and earning community service hours.) She recently assisted TJ Zion and me with our Joe DiMaggio Cancer Hospital group children who are or have undergone cancer treatments; and their siblings, relatives and friends.

The Joe D children have already faced many challenges both physical and mental but, literally RAN to our meeting place every Saturday afternoon; where Jillian has been there to greet them, and help teach them how to putt, chip and swing a driver!

I cannot express how impressed I am with this young lady. While she was not a student of The First Tee, she exemplifies all the Nine Core Values inherent in our program. She has been incredibly RESPONSIBLE showing up every week she could, while juggling a busy competitive playing schedule. (And, speak of juggling she can juggle 4 balls at a timeand bounce balls off her wedge!) Jillian always shows up in her The First Tee shirt with name badge; and is very aware of maintaining safety zones and caning clubs. The children love her (as did we coaches).

While I could write about how she embodies all of the Nine Core Values, the one that stands out in my mind, is how she exudes CONFIDENCE on recent occasions. In week 7, the benefactor of the Joe D program, Louis Chiara, observed the class (and presented the students with Nicks Golf hats, shirts and backpacks); and Jillian conducted a swing clinic.

Jillian participated in a couple of AJGA (American Junior Golf Association) ranked events, one in Orlando and one in Georgia. In Georgia, after two rounds, Jillian was tied for the lead. She ultimately finished tied for 3rd place and earned her exempt status for future events. All these accomplishments are taken in stride by this young lady who has a wonderful future ahead of her which hopefully will include The First Tee of Broward for many years to come.

Team Golf serves as a fun, social, less stressful approach to tournament play and is a fantastic way to get students involved with the game of golf in a team environment.

Similar to other youth sports, teams have weekly practices where golf instruction is provided by local PGA and LPGA Professionals serving as team coaches at public and private golf facilities throughout South Florida. Leagues are separated by county and weekly tournaments are held during the summer and fall months for area teams in each league.

Team Golf is designed specifically for children ages 6-14 and offers two distinct levels:
Junior and Masters. The Junior level is for beginning and intermediate players who do not possess extensive tournament experience, and offers an introduction through 6-hole or 9-hole team play. The Masters level is for intermediate and advanced players through 9-hole team play.

Not only will students learn how to play tournament golf but they will make friends for life!

Nice first performance of the year for The First Tee Palm Beaches at Jonathans Landing Old Trail. The team meets for practice every Tuesday with Coach Craig Watson, PGA at Dyer Park at 4:30 until 6pm.

Left to right: Assistant Coach Wen Barto, Players: Kirk Barto, Landon Murray, Jacie Goodman, Zoey Shamy, Jordan Reyes, Wylie Inman, Elvans Lorvil and Audrey Dzwill.
