ESPN Junior Course Reporter

This year, Isabella Rubio was chosen to represent our Chapter as an ESPN Junior Course Reporter at the tournament.  Guided by ESPN’s sports anchor Theo Dorsey, Isabella explored the media side of behind the scenes at the tournament. She learned the intricacies of event reporting. Together, they followed golf star Ricky Fowler.  Isabella even had the fun opportunity to film some B-roll for a broadcast later in the day.

Jahsiah In The Senate

Chapter student, Jahsiah Bowie, was honored to serve as a Page for a week in the Florida State Senate.

The Senate Page Program offers participants the opportunity to learn about the legislative process in Florida through a hands-on approach to civic learning. Pages role-play as Senators, develop ideas for new laws, draft legislation, and file bills. The week culminates with a mock session in which bills are debated and voted on by Senate Pages. Additionally, Senate Pages assist members of the Florida Senate by distributing legislative materials and correspondence in the Senate Chamber while observing the Senators as they discuss and debate legislation. Pages also lead the Pledge of Allegiance during session, enjoy guest speakers, and participate in educational tours and activities.

ACE – Game-Planning For The Future

Join our Ace Program! Ace is an additional capstone program built for teens to help them game-plan what’s next. It integrates the skills and inner strengths they’ve developed at First Tee and points them toward exploring, investing in, and building a clear plan and assets for their next step. In 2024, there will be 7-10 “ACE Days” that will take place during a day off of school where students will gather to complete projects and play golf. This is a program that is a benefit to your eligible students and is in addition to your already existing First Tee program. Students must be 16 years old and an active participant in our program for at least 3 years.

Congrats Coach Jack

Former Director of Operations, Jack Bloomfield, was recognized by United Way Broward and Mission United Broward for his six years of service to the veteran community. The presentation was held at their monthly meeting attended by staff and board members.

Our partnership with Mission United began in 2016 with one class of 20 veterans. Due to the overwhelming response and growth, we grew to 10 annual eight-week programs at four different courses. In that span, we taught over 260 veterans, with many veterans returning for additional classes.

Veterans Monthly Golf Outing

Veterans John Linn, Omar Gonzales, and Wesley Watkins played in the monthly golf outing at the Club at Weston Hills with Veteran Outreach Director, Jack Bloomfield.

Special thanks to Weston Hills’ Director of Golf, Jon Banas, for hosting our nation’s heroes.

Students Have A Blast At Junior Clinic

As always, Tuesday of tournament week featured our annual Junior Clinic.

Dennis Walters, and PGA Tour professional Parker Coody hosted this year’s clinic.  The event began with Dennis and Gussie putting on their inspirational show of chasing your dreams featuring golf trick shots.  Gussie even hit a few shots.  Does Dennis ever miss a shot?

Parker is the grandson of 1971 Master’s Champion Charles Coody.  He played college golf at the University of Texas before turning professional and earning his PGA TOUR card.  Parker talked to the kids and teens about his cherished memories playing golf with his grandfather and the importance of the short game that leads to lower scoring.  He watched chapter student Wylie Inman hit some drives and challenged him to a long drive competition.

Hot dogs and snacks were served to all that attended.  Over 60 juniors joined us for the clinic.

Women’s Leadership Forum

Chapter students, staff and Coaches attended the annual Women’s Leadership Forum Wednesday of tournament week. The forum was an enlightening and educational event attended by more than 150 current and emerging women leaders to join in celebration to discuss leadership development and female empowerment.

The leadership guest speaker was Ann Ligouri, a nationally renowned sports radio and cable sports talk show host, interviewer, reporter, author, speaker, entrepreneur, and philanthropist.

All the ladies also enjoyed celebrating the First Lady of Golf– Barbara Nicklaus’ birthday!

Our table stole the show in their stylish outfits generously donated by Lilly Pulitzer. Staff, coaches, and students included Gabbie Budd, Nyla Sims, Patty Cepeda-Russell, Mariana Flores, Cienna Collado, Jessica Stark, Abelina Wakeland, Sydney Rogers, Audrey Bacic and Chloe Chistofidis.
